I Remember:
Skip Hauer was my very best friend at Clairemont. We first met in our Junior year and were fast friends for the next two years. At school he was sort of a James Dean type, a little edgy, always academically successful, and a hit with the ladies. He was always my “go to guy” when I needed advice or consolation concerning my own rather stumbling romantic efforts. I can still see him down at the lunch court surrounded by his friends, always the center of any gathering. I remember many a Friday or Saturday night out at a football game or at Oscar's Drive-in with Skip. During our Junior year my mother had a little Triumph sports car and I was always talking her out of it on the weekends. We always told her we were going to the movies or some school function but in fact we generally cruised up the old coast highway looking for adventure. One night we made it all the way to Long Beach and back. Always when we returned home Skip had a story for my mom that covered our tracks. For some reason she never seemed to notice the miles we put on her car. Maybe she did, but since we always managed to bring it back in one piece she just let it go or maybe Skip just charmed her. Upon graduation Skip received a scholarship to attend George Washington University in Washington DC. Unhappy at school, Skip dropped out and later followed his father into the Navy. Skip graduated top of his class at boot camp on Point Loma and was trained as an electronics technician. While stationed in the San Francisco area Skip received a fleet appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Unfortunately, while at prep school, prior to the Academy, it was discovered that Skip had eye problems. He was not able to complete his training at the Naval Academy and returned to the fleet. The Navy offered him duty anywhere in the world to complete his service obligation. Skip opted for Puerto Rico. I don't know what Skip did there but a few months after he left the service the Governor General of Puerto Rico's daughter showed up on Skip's doorstep in San Diego in her limousine, complete with security detail. Apparently Skip charmed her as well. Skip survived a serious car accident and long hospital stay in 1982. His civilian working life was spent in the field of electronics. He married and fathered a son who lives in Texas. In October 1986, Skip admitted himself to the VA hospital in La Jolla. He died suddenly on the 27th of October. He was 44 years old. He is survived by his son, Shawn and by his sister, Nancy Hauer, a 1965 alumni of Clairemont High School. Skip was a credit to our school and a great friend who I miss to this day.
