Robert S. “Bob” Hawkins

Bob Hawkins' brother-in-law, friend and classmate, Ron Moody (CHS '60), writes to tell us:
Classmate Robert Hawkins died in December 2003 at age 61 after a year long struggle with ALS. After graduating from CHS in 1960, he earned a bachelor's degree and teaching credential at San Diego State and taught for 33 years at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in El Centro where he was highly regarded as a dedicated and inspirational teacher of history and language arts. He donated much of his free time to tutoring students, sponsoring clubs, and guiding school tours to Washington DC and environs. He was a member of the Imperial Valley Civil War Roundtable and the Hemingway Society and a builder of museum quality marine vessels & models.
In 1990 he married Grace Arguilez with whom he shared an enthusiasm for books, travel, antiques, Shakespeare and the cinema. He was survived by Grace, a daughter, Teri Lee Rose of Oceanside, his former wife Judy and his younger sister Sandy (CHS'63 and wife of Ron Moody, CHS'60) who subsequently died in 2010.
I Remember:
Bob was one of my great friends in high school. He was always good natured, modest, generous, and kind. I particularly remember our conversations in the Lunch Court every day. We talked endlessly about everything under the sun from quantum mechanics to girls (both these topics quite theoretical I'm afraid). I guess we were just proto geeks. I'm very sorry Bob is gone but it does not surprise me that he was so well liked and left such a great legacy at El Centro. He was a great credit to himself and our school as I always knew he would be.
