John and Darla, high school sweethearts, married after graduation and had five children; Jennifer, Natalie, John III, David, and Amanda.
John was an entrepreneur who entered the family business after graduation, working with the laundry service his father ran. John left the family business to become a real estate investor owning a couple of duplexes and many apartment complexes. He began his own drain cleaning business with Darla as his "executive assistant" in their enterprises but retired from that business at age 40. John continued to maintain the rental units they owned, but spent most of his time coaching his daughters softball teams and spending time with his family. Darla went back to school when she was 50 and became a sign language interpreter.
On July 6, 1996, on route to their youngest daughter Amanda's softball game, they, and their 11 year old child were killed in a 5 car accident. John and Darla were 54 and 53, respectively, at the time of their deaths.
Their four remaining children have given them a total of 16 grandchildren. Jennifer, a stay at home mom, has 5 children; David, a San Diego police officer in the northern district, has two children; John III, a driver for UPS, has 5 children and Natalie, also a stay at home mom has 4 children and teaches a Certified Survival Swim program for kids ages 2 to 12.
